A Guide Book of United States Coins
1947   First Edition
First & Second Printing

The first book feature for this new website must appropriately be the first edition Red Book, first and second printing.

This Red Book was published as a reference book and 9000 copies were released in November 1946.  The first printing is a very scarce edition, especially in good condition.

Because the first printing was so popular, it sold out and a second printing of 9000 copies was released in February 1947.  To distinguish the difference between the first and second printing, in a discussion of the Morgan silver dollar on page 135, the first printing has the statement "...which probably accounts for the scarcity of this date."  The second printing changed the wording to "...which probably accounts for the scarcity of 1903 O".

In 2006, Whitman publishing released a replica of the first edition to commemorate the Red Book's 60th anniversary.  This edition is called the Tribute edition.
